German Road Safety App: Better Road Safety for All
The multilingual app “German Road Safety” helps foreign-language road users orient themselves on German roads. The German Road Safety Council (DVR), who are behind the free app, have been honored with the DEKRA Award 2017 for the “Safety on the Road” category.

German Road Safety is for everybody
The German Road Safety App is designed to improve collective safety and mobility for all those active in German public life. The app is an animated compact guide and offers a comprehensive overview of the most important traffic regulations to heed when using German roads.
The free app has already been making huge waves, and is aimed at all stakeholders in road traffic safety. “German traffic laws are new for everybody that arrives here. After all, we are all foreigners somewhere. German Road Safety is directed at all those that wish to engage with traffic situations in a safe manner,” states Christian Kellner, Chief Executive of the DVR. A primary goal of the DVR is to ensure that displaced persons are aware of and able to abide by the most important traffic laws in Germany, thus enabling them to be safe road users. “Mobility is a basic need and connects both people and cultures. German Road Safety is just us doing our part to embody a welcoming culture”, explains Kellner.

Many institutions already use the German Road Safety App
Each topic area in the app provides valuable tips for safe behavior in a range of typical traffic situations. Video animations support text content that is both informative and inspires people to get out and be mobile. Rounding off the app’s content are two quiz modules that allow users to test their knowledge, and a list of important points of contact. Many institutions across Germany are already taking full advantage of German Road Safety’s offering. The app is also being used by integration associations, language schools, the police, sports clubs and driving schools. The German Road Safety App is available in nine different languages: German, English, Arabic, Farsi, Pashtu, Spanish, French, Russian and Chinese.
The DVR has long been working on extending the scope of the app. It already includes the sections “Using Local Transport,” “By Foot,” “Cycling,” and “Cars and Motorcycles.” The categories “Children and Roads” and “First Aid” are in the pipeline.

In addition to the online version, you can also find the German Road Safety App in the App Store and Google Play Store.

Automated, but Safe!
At the Lausitzring in Klettwitz, Germany, DEKRA puts assistance systems and automated vehicle technologies through their paces, most recently also in urban environments on specially established city courses. These tests are of central importance – because acceptance by society depends on the safety and reliability of the systems.
Parking Safely Means Arriving Safely
Safe parking lots for trucks remain in short supply. An EU-wide uniform safety standard for truck parking areas is intended to make the transportation of goods less dangerous and stressful. Digital booking platforms help to make more efficient use of parking spaces and make the daily lives of professional drivers more comfortable.
Vehicle Inspection: “Software and Data are Important, but not Everything”
Additional assistance systems, networking, new drive technologies: Christoph Nolte, Head of Vehicle Inspection Service Division and Executive Vice President of the DEKRA Group, explains how these things are changing vehicle inspections.
